Rheumatoid arthritis in a patient with acromegaly: a diagnostic challenge
Abstract
Acromegaly is a chronic disease characterized by hypersecretion of the growth hormone (GH) and the insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I). Frequently the joint is compromised by acromegaly, leading to significant morbidity and functional impairment, given that the GH directly generates bone changes and cartilage damage. The relation of acromegaly with rheumatoid arthritis is rare, making it a real challenge for the physician´s early diagnosis and aggressive medical intervention in order to avoid irreversible effects common in rheumatoid arthritis. We report the case of a patient in the fifth decade of life with an evolution of 10 years of acromegaly, as a result of a pituitary adenoma, producer of the GH and early rheumatoid arthritis diagnose.References
